PRESS RELEASE - Commencement of works on installation of fire alarm and video surveillance systems in the National Museum BiH

A part of activities within the Project "Preventive Conservation of the Collections of National Museum of BiH", works on the installation of fire alarm and video surveillance systems, have commenced in the National Museum in Sarajevo. Fund for this Project were donated by a special U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, through the US Embassy in BiH. The Project worth 625,000.00 USD (1,070,000.00 BAM) is being implemented by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments.

The works started in January and it is expected to have them completed by the end of February 2017. These are activities that are a part of the preventive conservation of buildings and units, which include measures to prevent damage to the facilities and the collections as a primary intervention.

This intervention also includes monitoring and early detection of potential problems, which is directly solved by installing video surveillance of the entire complex of buildings, as well as the expansion of the existing fire alarm system in the pavilions of department of archeology and natural sciences.

The project of technical protection according to which the works are going to be carried out was developed by a company DSC doo Sarajevo; video surveillance system will be installed by the company Securitas doo Sarajevo, and the fire alarm system will be set up by a company Vatrosistemi doo Sarajevo. The total value of the works is 134,509 KM.

The Project of primary conservation aims to prevent, stop or slow down the deterioration of the museum collection by introducing high standards of care and creating optimal conditions for its preservation.

For 2017, the implementation of some activities on preventive conservation of the Museum complex was planned, which includes ensuring security conditions for the complex and activities related to the restoration of roofs on the buildings where departments of archeology and natural history are located, as well as the restoration of the concrete balustrade railing of the complex.

For this year, works on the restoration of wall and ceiling paintings in the Department of Prehistory are planned. Activities will be implemented in stages over a period of three years, and they will enhance the presentation and security of museum collections in all the pavilions of the National Museum.
